What Is GPA and Why Does It Matter in High School?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It’s basically a number that shows how well you’ve done in all your classes. Most US colleges look at your GPA very closely when deciding whether to admit you — it’s one of the top factors after course rigor and test scores (if required).

There are two main types you’ll hear about:

High School GPA Scale Explained (2026 Standard US Scale)

Most high schools use this common 4.0 unweighted scale:

Letter GradePercentage RangeUnweighted GPA PointsWeighted (Honors)Weighted (AP/IB)
A / A+90–100%4.04.55.0
A-90–92%3.74.24.7
B+87–89%3.33.84.3
B80–86%3.03.54.0
B-80–82%2.73.23.7
C+77–79%2.32.83.3
C70–76%2.02.53.0

Note: Exact cutoffs and weighting vary by school. Always check your school’s policy or transcript!

Step-by-Step: How to Calculate High School GPA (Manual Method)

  1. List every class you’ve taken (include credits if your school uses them — most classes = 1 credit per year).
  2. Convert each letter grade to points using the scale above (unweighted for basic calc, weighted if it’s Honors/AP).
  3. Multiply points by credits → this gives “quality points” for each class.
  4. Add up all quality points.
  5. Add up total credits.
  6. Divide total quality points by total credits → that’s your GPA!

Example: Math (A, 1 credit) = 4.0 × 1 = 4.0
English Honors (B+, 1 credit) = 3.3 + 0.5 = 3.8 × 1 = 3.8
Total points = 7.8 → Total credits = 2 → GPA = 3.90

What is a good GPA for college applications in 2026?

Competitive schools want 3.7+ unweighted (or 4.0+ weighted). Top colleges often average 3.9–4.0+. But remember: GPA is just one part — rigor, essays, activities matter too!

Do colleges use weighted or unweighted GPA?

Many recalculate using unweighted or their own system (core classes only, standardized weights). Weighted shows rigor, so take challenging courses!
