Sagamu, Nigeria, British heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries in a serious car crash on Monday that killed two people, according to Nigerian authorities.

The Anthony Joshua car crash occurred around 11 a.m. local time on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Makun in Ogun State. Joshua, 36, was a passenger in the rear seat of a black Lexus SUV when it collided with a stationary truck parked on the roadside.
Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that preliminary investigations suggest the vehicle was speeding and lost control during an overtaking maneuver. Some reports cite a burst tire as the cause, leading the driver to swerve.

Of the five adult males involved, two died at the scene (reportedly foreign nationals), two escaped unhurt, and Joshua was rescued with minor injuries. He was taken to an undisclosed hospital, where he is described as stable and conscious.
Videos circulating on social media show Joshua being helped from the damaged vehicle, appearing dazed and in pain as bystanders and security personnel assisted him.

Joshua, of Nigerian-British heritage, was on holiday visiting family roots in the Sagamu area following his sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul on December 19 in Miami.
Reactions and Investigation
Promoter Eddie Hearn stated: “Thankfully he appears okay from what I have seen… We are awaiting more information.”
Jake Paul posted on X: “Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”
Ogun State police have launched a full investigation into the Anthony Joshua accident. Authorities extended condolences to the families of the deceased and urged caution on Nigerian highways, where speeding and improper overtaking are common factors in crashes.
As of December 30, 2025, Joshua is recovering, with no further updates on his condition or potential impact on future fights.
